  • What to do if you or someone you know gets scammed

Financial frontline: how financial advisors can protect clients from the surge in digital scams

Session Overview

Scams and financial fraud are on the rise and has cost Australians billions of dollars and caused severe emotional and financial harm. Advisers play a critical role in prevention and recovery. This webinar will equip advisers with practical tools to educate clients on scam awareness, recognise early warning signs, and implement proactive strategies to reduce risk. It will also provide guidance on supporting clients who have been scammed—covering trauma-informed approaches, navigating reimbursement processes, and advocating for justice. Real-life case studies will highlight systemic gaps and demonstrate how advisers can make a meaningful difference.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants were able to:

  1. Explain the scale and impact of scams on clients, including financial, psychological, and systemic consequences.

  2. Develop client education strategies to raise awareness of scams, identify red flags, and promote safe financial behaviours.

  3. Apply practical steps to support clients post-incident, including emotional support, referral pathways, and navigating reimbursement and dispute resolution processes.

  4. Evaluate adviser responsibilities and ethical considerations in preventing scams and assisting affected clients, aligning with best practice and regulatory expectations.

MEET OUR COMMUNITY TRAINERS

CHARLES CAN RUN A VIDEO OR IN-PERSON COMMUNITY TRAINING SESSION

Charles Fellner is a retired IT professional from Sydney. After seeing various friends being scammed, he wanted to do something to fight back. Rather than creating yet another website on the topic he decided instead to do some thorough research and then conduct presentations and group discussions at various clubs such as Rotary and Lions on the subject of scam awareness. In these presentations his focus is on the more common scams. He explains what goes on behind these scams, the steps that one should take to avoid being scammed, and what one should do if they have been scammed. He also has a strong interest in the psychology of scamming and believes this is a very important and often neglected part of the puzzle. He talks with people almost every day about scamming every chance he gets.
